Papers of George Russell Shaw, 1890s-1930s.

The George R. Shaw papers reflect Mr. Shaw's contribution to horticulture and botany as an authority on systematic identification, description, and illustration of pines. The Collection covers Shaw's work from the turn of the century to approximataely 1930 including his many notes and illustrations in miniature notebooks from journeys to Europe and Mexico.

Shaw (1848-1937) was educated at Harvard (A.B. 1869 and A.M. 1872) and traveled to Mexico between 1903 and 1905 to study pines. His book The Pines of Mexico (1909) appeared as the first publication of the Arnold Arboretum; and the Genus Pinus as no. 5 (1914). Ernest Henry Wilson was born in Chipping Campden, Gloustershire, England in 1876. In 1892 he was employed at Birmingham Botanical Gardens as a gardener and also studied botany at Birmingham Technical School and at the Royal College of Science in South Kensington. In 1897 he worked for the Royal Botanical Garden at Kew; in 1899 he was sent by the nursery firm of Veitch & Sons, to China to collect seeds and living plants. Wilson returned in 1902 and went on a second trip for Veitch, 1903-1906....
